Emphasizing safety & knowledge, this program prepares our Lead Animal Control Officer for long-term success while supporting the community’s needs effectively.
Duties:
· Assumes responsibility for the daily animal control operations of the Animal Services Division.
· Trains & supervises Animal Control staff; assists with performance evaluations & interviewing departmental applicants.
· Assists with writing, revising & implementing departmental policies & procedures; plans & creates training materials; participates in regularly scheduled division meetings.
· Assists with administrative duties, prepares reports, proofreads & submits case reports.
· Investigates & assists with resolving customer complaints & employee conflicts.
· Performs all Animal Control Officer duties to include but not limited to enforces city ordinances & regulations; issues licenses & permits for dogs & cats residing in Salina City Limits; provides public education on animal control ordinances & regulations & animal care methods/techniques; establishes quarantines involving rabies incidents & other health concerns as needed; prepares rabies specimens for laboratory tests; performs first aid on injured animals; impounds animals, cleans & cares for housed animals; performs euthanasia by means of lethal injection; picks up dead animals found in public streets & highways; disposes/incinerates animal carcasses.
Education:
· High school diploma or G.E.D.
· Module A & B of National Animal Care & Control Association training, current certification in chemical capture & proven proficiency on euthanasia methods verified & approved by a licensed veterinarian within six (6) months from start date of employment.
Experience:
· Minimum of one (1) year experience working as an Animal Control Officer or related field with domestic animals.
Requirement:
· Must live within 40-minutes response time.
· Must possess a valid Kansas driver’s license.
Work Type: Medium, exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Machines, Tools, & Equipment: Animal shelter equipment, calculator, catch pole, computer, crematorium, electronic tablet, fax machine, laboratory equipment, scanner, telephone, temperature gun, tranquilizer gun, two-way radio, vehicle, & voice recorder.
Hours:
· Works variable schedule to include evenings, weekends, holidays, & overnight calls.
· Shifts vary: 4 x 10-hour shifts/week including nights, weekends & holidays; shifts may start at 5:00 a.m. & responds to overnight calls.
Starting Pay DOQ:
· $20.92-21.97/hr.
· $43,514-45,698/yr.
· Additional $1.50/hour paid for hours worked after 6:00 p.m. & before 6:00 a.m.
Paid Time Off:
· 48 hours of vacation available upon hire; additional 48 hours earned during the year (96 hours in first year).
· 96 hours of sick leave during first year.
